The Borough Clerk's Office is responsible for planning and administering Borough regular and special elections. The Borough’s regular election date is on the first Tuesday, following the first Monday, in November. The 2024 regular election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.

If you have questions regarding the State/Federal election please contact the Alaska State Division of Elections.

The cities of Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla hold elections on the first Tuesday in October. Please contact the respective city should you have questions regarding a city election.

Are you registered to vote?

registerIn order for your vote to be counted for any regular Borough election, you MUST be registered 30-days prior to the election. Updates to your voter registration also fall under this deadline. Please register to vote or update your voter information prior to the deadline to be eligible to vote or have your vote count.

The deadline to qualify to vote in the 2024 Regular Borough Election will be Sunday, October 6, 2024.

You can update or register to vote online or print a Voter Registration Application from the Alaska State Division of Elections at www.elections.alaska.gov or you may register to vote at Alaska State Division of Elections office or  the Borough Clerk's office.  Voter registration applications are also available at  the City Clerk's Offices in Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla.

Voter Qualifications

A person may vote in a Borough election only if the person:

  • is qualified to vote in State elections under AS 15.05.010;
  • has been a resident of the Borough for 30 days immediately preceding the election;
  • is registered to vote in State elections at a residence address within the Borough at least 30 days before the Borough election at which the person seeks to vote;and
  • is not disqualified under Article V of the State Constitution.

officials The Borough Clerk's Office is always looking for dependable workers for our elections. If you are interested in applying to serve as an election worker for the upcoming election, please apply with the Borough Clerk's Office. You may print out the application from the link above.

Applications are also available by contacting the Borough Clerk’s Office at 861-8683. In order to serve, you must be a registered voter of the Borough. Training and compensation are provided.

Candidate Information

Candidate Information

Candidate Qualifications:

Candidates for Mayor shall reside in the Borough and have been a resident of the Borough for one year immediately prior to the election and meet the requirements of MSB 2.08.030 and 25.15.010.

Candidates for Assembly seats shall reside in the Borough and in the Assembly District for which they file and meet the requirements of MSB 2.12.030 & 25.15.010.
Candidates for the School Board seats shall reside in the Borough and within the Assembly District boundaries for which they file (MSB 19.04).
Candidates shall provide proof that they are eligible, or shall be eligible by the date of the election, to be recognized as a candidate for any election and meet the requirements of 25.15.010.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough will hold a regular election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The following offices are to be filled at the election:

  • Mayor - four-year term ending November 2028
  • Assembly District 3 - four-year term ending November 2028
  • Assembly District 6 - four-year term ending November 2028
  • Assembly District 7 - four-year term ending November 2028
  • School Board District 1 - three-year term ending November 2027
  • School Board District 4 - three-year term ending November 2027
  • School Board District 5 - one year term ending November 2025

Candidate Declaration packets will be available on Wednesday, August 14. The Candidate Declaration filing period is Monday, August 19 at 8 a.m. through Friday, August 30 at 5 p.m. Candidate Declarations shall be submitted in original form to the Borough Clerk’s office. They cannot be transmitted electronically.

Early/Absentee Voting

Absentee By-Mail Voting

ballotAny registered voter of the Borough may apply for a ballot to be mailed to them by submitting an Absentee By-Mail Ballot Application not later than seven days prior to Election Day. Please note: The Borough's absentee by-mail application is separate from that of the Alaska State Division of Elections and the cities of Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla. 

Things applicants need to know about the process:

  • Apply early to receive your Borough ballot in a timely manner
  • Carefully complete ALL sections of the application
  • Omissions or errors may cause a delay in ballot mailing
  • Application MUST contain the applicant's signature; no one else may sign for you!

Once the ballots are ready for distribution and upon the timely receipt of an application, the official ballot and voting material will be mailed to the applicant at the ballot mailing address provided on the application. Upon receiving the ballot, applicants need to carefully follow ALL instructions to ensure that the ballot is properly cast.

Ballot envelopes must be postmarked by Election Day, and received in the mail by the Borough Clerk's Office no later than three calendar days after the election. Hand-delivered ballots must be returned to a Borough election official by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Early/Absentee In-Person voting will begin on Monday, October 21, 2024, and continue through Monday, November 4, 2024 at the following locations and times:

  • Mat-Su Borough Building: 350 E. Dahlia Avenue, Palmer (All ballot types are available at this location.)

              o Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Division of Elections, Mat-Su Regional Office: 1700 E. Bogard Road, Building B, Suite 102, Wasilla (All ballot types are available at this location.)

              o Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sundays 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

  • Houston City Hall and Talkeetna and Trapper Creek Libraries (The ballots at these locations are limited and specific to the voters who reside in that district.)

              o October 21 through November 4 – During Normal Business Hours

Voting Assistance
A Touch Screen Voting unit will be available at the Mat-Su Borough Building and at the Division of Elections, Mat-Su Regional Office 15 days prior to the election at the dates and times specified above. Touch screen voting is intended for the blind, disabled and voters with reading difficulties. The touch screen units allow disabled voters to vote unassisted with a magnified, high contrast and audio ballot.
