Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers (VMBaH), in partnership with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough (Borough) Land and Resource Management Division (LRM), plan to improve mountain bike trails within the Government Peak Recreation Area (GPRA). The proposed activity involves maintaining trails with gravel by way of helicopter and sling load drop offs. The anticipated date of the proposed trail maintenance and improvements is June 14, 2023, with a tentative date range of June 12 to 15 to accommodate weather conditions. An anticipated closure will be necessary during the helicopter sling load drop off operation and will be posted on the Mat-Su Borough Recreation and Library Services Facebook page.  

VMBaH has a Trail Care Agreement with the Borough, which involves developing and maintaining recreational assets in the GPRA. Improving the trails’ conditions aims to provide better recreational opportunities for the community and visitors.   Due to heavy rain last year, the mountain bike trails at the GPRA experienced significant erosion and damage, making maintenance necessary to improve their condition for safe and enjoyable use by hikers and bikers. The targeted trails for maintenance are Fireweed, Fiddlehead, Singletrack, Monkshood, and Field of Dreams, with an estimated 23 gravel drop off locations spread throughout the listed trails.
