Matanuska-Susitna Borough

HPC - Archive Organization

Historical preservation benefits when resources can be easily discovered and are available for use. Over the decades, the Mat-Su Borough government has gained a collection of interesting resources. Some items, such as old maps and photos, were once part of routine government work but now represent historical snapshots of our communities. Others were donated by people who wanted to share their memories with future residents and saw their government as a stable entity capable of preserving them. Even items which seem like junk in the moment, such as Matanuska Maid containers or advertisements for old businesses, can become significant years later.

This page is an effort to describe the items which the Borough owns, and what we're doing to keep them accessible to our residents. We hope this project will improve access for researchers, museums, and cultural institutions.

35mm Slide Digitization

The Mat-Su Borough has recently scanned over 2600 35mm slides in a series of albums ranging from the 1890s to the 1980s. The images still need to be checked for proper orientation and have descriptions added before they can be fully shared, but in the meantime here are some of our favorites!
