DES Reminding to Celebrate Safely this July 4

Mat-Su | Stefan Hinman | Wednesday, July 01, 2026

The Matanuska- Susitna Borough Department of Emergency Services reminds our community and visitors to celebrate safely over the July 4th holiday.  With the various ways people choose to celebrate over the long weekend, it is one of the most dangerous holidays for risk of injury. Now is the time to plan and take precautions to ensure your activities are performed safely.

  • Fireworks: Besides being dangerous explosives, fireworks are prohibited in the Mat-Su Borough, with the exception of New Year's Eve. Please refer to the MSB Code 8.35 for applicable rules and regulations. Code Compliance Page.
  • Burn Practices: Be aware of the Wildland fire danger. Be cautious of dry conditions with all sources of ignition. Follow all safe burning practices and guidelines from the Division of Forestry and Fire Protection. Ensure all fires are completely extinguished before leaving recreational areas or camp sites and properly dispose of any BBQ ashes.
  • Grill safely: Make sure your grills are at least 10ft away from house siding, handrails, and other combustibles like decks and balconies. Always open the lid of your gas grill when igniting it and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Travel safely: Give plenty of time to arrive at your destination. On longer trips, be sure you are prepared for any unexpected mechanical issues. DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE, and DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.
  • Water Safety: If celebrating on one of our many waterways, be sure to wear your Personal Floatation Device (PFD) and use safe water practices [Link last press release?].
  • Children: Monitor your children closely. Many tragedies occur when children wonder off, even for a moment. Be sure kids wear safety equipment appropriate for their activity, such as helmets on ATVs and PFDs near or in any water.
  • Weather: Monitor the weather. Conditions can change quickly, and lightning or gusty winds present a hazard to many outdoor activities.

We hope all members of our community and visitors have a safe and festive holiday weekend.
