New Mat-Su Borough Program Launches Property Clean-Up in Williwaw with Volunteer Support to Revitalize Neighborhood

Wasilla, Alaska — September 8, 2025
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough has kicked off the largest property clean-up in its history, targeting the Williwaw subdivision in the Wasilla area. Running from September 11–13, this ambitious effort will involve over 300 volunteers working to remove trash, junk vehicles, and hazardous structures.

The initiative is powered by strong community partnerships, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Wasilla Police Department, local church groups, drug counselors, Alaska Waste, and Families for the Improvement of Safety and Health (FISH). Their combined efforts are transforming Williwaw into a safer, healthier, and more vibrant neighborhood.

“Typically, cleaning up a single property can take years and cost thousands of dollars,” said Wade Long, MSB Development Services Manager. “Through the Private Property Program and our community partners, we’re accelerating the process—saving time, reducing costs, and improving quality of life for residents.”

Williwaw was selected due to its high concentration of residents and its central location within the Borough’s urban core. While the neighborhood has historically faced challenges, recent progress, including new construction and the removal of over 70 tons of waste by FISH, marks a turning point. This clean-up builds on that momentum, addressing blight and supporting long-term revitalization.

So far16 properties have been cleaned up under the Borough’s Private Property Program, which is supporting the effort. Additional donations are being coordinated through FISH.

How to Get Involved

The Borough encourages residents to identify other neighborhoods in need of similar support. Many communities already participate in the Solid Waste Division’s annual Community Cleanup program.

To donate money, food, water, or volunteer your time, please contact FISH at (907) 373-6557.
