FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spring thaw creates dangerous ice conditions across Mat-Su waterways

With the arrival of spring and warmer temperatures, ice on creeks, lakes, and rivers across the Matanuska-Susitna Borough is rapidly melting and becoming increasingly unstable, local emergency officials warn.

Even ice that appears thick can be deceptively weak and dangerous due to warming temperatures and changing conditions. The Department of Emergency Services and local fire and rescue departments are reminding residents to stay off the ice and to use caution around all waterways.

As ice begins to decay, its thickness and strength can vary significantly from one area to another, creating hazardous conditions that are difficult to detect.

Residents who witness an emergency or see someone fall through the ice are urged to call 911 immediately. Officials emphasize that bystanders should maintain a safe distance from the water, keep visual contact with the individual or the person’s last known location, and never attempt to go onto the ice to perform a rescue.

Emergency responders remind the public that attempting a rescue on unstable ice can quickly lead to additional victims and complicate response efforts.

For more information on seasonal ice safety, residents are encouraged to follow guidance from local emergency services and remain aware of changing spring conditions.
