Nelson Road Pathway Phase 2

Scope

The project scope is to provide road shoulders or a separate pathway for pedestrian traffic.

Machetanz Elementary School and the Gateway Community Council asked the Borough Capital Projects Department to study and address pedestrian safety concerns for students and residents walking on the subdivision roads.

Project Benefits

Improves pedestrian safety in an area of the borough that is rapidly growing and developing.

Provides improved multi-modal access to Machetanz Elementary School.

Project Status

In 2016 Trunk Road and a separated pathway was extended south from a new roundabout at the intersection with the Parks Highway Interchange to just past the Wasilla Creek Bridge on Nelson Road. Funding for the design phase of Nelson Road Pathway Phase 2, from Machetanz Elementary to the current end of Nelson Road is possible through a combination of Gateway Community Council funds ($5K), the Trails and Parks Foundation ($19K) and MSB ($14K). Design is currently in progress at 35% completion.

The Borough is currently seeking additional funding for utility relocation and construction with proposed construction in 2021.
